Dr Virginia Keft

Murrawarri.
Lives & works on Dharawal Country (Wollongong) & Gadigal Country (Sydney).

Dr Virginia Keft is a Murrawarri Woman. She has firm links to her community and whenever possible she spends time on Country connecting with family, sharing knowledge and forging bonds through culture. Her art practice encompasses painting, drawing, mixed media assemblage, textiles, weaving and sculpture. Weaving is a key theme in Dr Keft’s practice, appearing both physically and symbolically. Woven textiles, intertwining lines and interlocking patterning speak to fragile interconnections between family, Culture, Country and Language.

“My artwork for NAIDOC 2022 reflects the importance of a shared commitment to action. Positive change is in our hands: it’s in listening to Elders and knowledge holders, it’s in building communities, and it’s with our allies. All of us have the power to get up, stand up, and show up! My work is about community, showing respect, journeying together, and a deep love of my Aboriginal culture”.

Not only is Virginia super excited to create the work this year for Village Central Wyong, but she can’t wait to see all the wonderful colouring submissions – Dr Virginia will judge the competition!

Winners announced 8 July 2022.
